The Madison County Storm Water Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance was adopted in 2000. The department is responsible for enforcing the requirements of this ordinance. In addition, the department is involved in regional storm water planning. The Regional Storm Water Coordinator is part of the department. Additionally, the department works with state and federal agencies pursuing regional and localized storm water improvements. Current projects include the implementation of the MS4 Phase II Storm Water Permit and various partnerships with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Interior Flood Restoration Project.

Madison County requires the completion of an application for a Fill Permit prior to the stockpiling of dirt or the filling in of property based upon the requirements of a Fill Ordinance.
