Recycling & Sustainability
The Planning & Development Department's recycling program is one of the region's most successful recycling initiatives. The program first implemented curbside residential recycling nearly twenty (20) years ago and today over 35% of all household trash is recycled. In addition 85% of waste generated in Madison County Government buildings is recycled and is approaching zero waste in the future. The program also provides seven (7) drop-off recycling stations throughout Madison County and offers a grant program to fund environmentally-friendly projects undertaken by municipalities and townships.
In addition to the recycling program, the Planning & Development Department runs the Green Schools Program. The program assists local schools with recycling and waste reduction initiatives and helps educate students on the importance of recycling. The program assists with various recycling endeavors in schools including the tab top tally, eyeglass collection, the shoes for water program, aluminum can drive, and many others. The program is exemplified by the annual TRASHformations and the Earth Flag events.
The recycling program hosts an off-site website that provides an abundance of information on programs and initiatives.
In 2012, planning staff began a process to develop a Sustainability Plan. The plan is intended to expand the existing recycling program beyond waste management. The program will begin addressing other environmental issues, including energy efficiency, stormwater management, and green buildings. The plan is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
