History and Growth
Madison County Recorder's Office

The Madison County Recorder's Office is responsible for maintaining all real estate related documents for the county.  Our records begin in 1812.  Madison County was created on September 12, 1812 by proclamation of Governor Ninian Edwards.  At the time of proclamation, Madison County extended as far as the Wabash, which is on the Indiana border.  As the area divided into other counties, the appropriate records went to their pertinent counties.  The records we have dating back to 1812 are records of land that is in present Madison County.

  • 1812 – JUNE 1985 – Records indexed by hand.
  • FEBRUARY 15, 1974 to date – Records are maintained through an in-house microfilming system.
  • JUNE 1985 – Computerized indexing put into place.
  • OCTOBER 16, 1996 – Document imaging and retrieval provided
  • 2005 – On-line searching made available per contract.

The Recorder's Office has made many changes over the years and will continue to do so to better meet the needs of our county residents.

I have provided you with additional information that I am sure will prove helpful when recording or researching records in our office.

Serving the public is of utmost importance, therefore if the Recorder's office can assist you please call 618-692-8919 or 618-296-4644
