                                                        Keyona Harris

In September 2013, Keyona Harris was recruited into the Bond County WIA-MERS Goodwill Youth Program, through the Madison County Employment and Training Department.  She graduated from Alton High School in May of 2012.  Keyona had been transitioning back and forth from her parents.  She would live with her father, who resides in the Alton area, for a while and then move in and live with her mother, who resides in Greenville.

When Keyona came to the WIA youth program, she had some previous housekeeping experience from employment at a local nursing home.   However, Keyona needed a certification in an area of interest, assistance with tutoring and supportive services, a permanent job, general direction in her life, and a mentor to provide leadership and guidance.

Keyona is a hard worker who prides herself in doing good work.  While an employee in subsidized employment, she worked at a local hotel, as a housekeeper, then at a thrift store, as a floor clerk.  After Keyona's subsidized employment ended, she applied, interviewed, and obtained a job at Fayco Enterprises Inc., in Vandalia, working with mentally handicapped individuals in their residence in Greenville.

Since Keyona is a quick learner, she became a (DSP) Direct Support Person who takes care of residents in a couple of housing units in the town of Greenville.  Keyona works many hours and enjoys working with the disabled residents.  She is also a very sociable person who enjoys her time spent with her residents.  Keyona has a positive attitude and is a people person who treats people equally and fairly.  At work she assists residents with getting dressed, cooking meals, and providing transportation.   Keyona drives a company van in order to transport residents to and from appointments, work, church, and community activities and events.  Recently she became a Medic Technician who now administers prescription drugs to her residents.

While enrolled in the WIA youth program, she has obtained her OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) certification through Kaskaskia College, improved her Language TABE score to the next functional level, and completed her job readiness training.  Keyona continually meets with her case manager on a regular basis and attends as many group meetings as her schedule allows.  She is constantly busy with her work.  Keyona spends her limited free time with her friends and family.

In the near future Keyona plans on obtaining her CNA certification through the local community college in her area.
