Important dates for the 2020 Primary Election on Tuesday March 17, 2020:

September 3, 2019     First Day to circulate petitions for independent, new political parties and nonpartisan offices. Contact your local government’s election official. 

November 25, 2019     First Day to file petitions nominating petitions of new political party,

                                      nonpartisan, and independent candidates as well as certificates of
                                      nomination for established party caucus candidates.

December 2, 2019     Last Day to file petitions nominating petitions of new political party,

                                      nonpartisan, and independent candidates as well as certificates of
                                      nomination for established party caucus candidates.

All petitions filed by persons waiting in line at the office of the County Clerk as of 8:30 A.M. on the first day for filing, November 25, 2019, shall be considered as having been simultaneously filed.  Petitions, filed by mail, which are received in the office of the County Clerk in the first mail delivery or pick up on the first day of filing shall be considered as having been simultaneously filed as of 8:30 A.M.  Petitions received prior to November 25, 2019, cannot be accepted and will be returned.  All petitions received after 8:30 A.M. on November 25, 2019 shall be considered as having been filed in the order of actual receipt except petitions filed within the last hour on December 2, 2019 will also be considered simultaneously filed.   Whenever two or more petitions are simultaneously filed for the same office, the County Clerk shall break ties and determine the order of filing by means of a lottery.

The office hours are from 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday.  On Monday, December 2, 2019, the last day for filing petitions, the office will be open until 5:00 P.M.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

PETITIONS RECEIVED PRIOR TO NOVEMBER 25, 2019 CANNOT BE ACCEPTED AND WILL BE RETURNED.

JULY 13, 2020 – First day to file petitions in the office of the County Clerk  

JULY 20, 2020 – Last day to file petitions in the office of the County Clerk

Write-In Candidates

To become a write-in candidate, you must file a "Declaration of Intent to be a Write-In" form with the County Clerk at least 61 days prior to an election. 

If an objection to a candidate's nominating papers or petitions for an office is sustained after the 61st day before the election, he or she can file a notarized declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate for that office with the County Clerk no later than 7 days prior to the election. 

Write-in votes for candidates who file this form will be counted.

Pollwatchers

To be a  pollwatcher you must: 

  • be registered to vote in Illinois
  • have valid credentials from the Madison County Clerk’s Office
  • have separate credentials issued for each voting site selected to observe 
  • Pollwatchers are required to surrender their credentials at the polls and sign the Pollwatcher Register.
